GE: In The Wild – Show Branding

We Want to Go, Where We Go, Where We Go.

CLIENT:
GE
via Atomic Entertainment

GE: In the Wild is a web series hosted by Adam Savage and Allie Ward. They team up to explore industrial innovation in the places where they actually happen: behind the scenes of GE’s leading facilities. Our pals at Atomic asked us to create the show branding for this 11 episode series. The graphics toolkit included the show open, lower thirds, and banners aimed at viewers who may be watching without sound.

We had a blast developing the show graphics as well as custom content and explainers for many of the episodes. In the episode above, Adam and Allie visit the build site of the world’s largest power transformer and an off-shore wind farm in Germany. Be sure to watch all of the other episodes on GE’s YouTube channel. They’re super fun and informative for you science nerds out there.

iPic Life – Show Graphics Package

Let’s All Go to the Lobby…

CLIENT:
iPic Entertainment
via Atomic Entertainment

iPic Life is a mini newsmagazine & lifestyle program that screens in the ultra high-end iPic Theaters across the USA. The show features a variety of segments including interviews with taste makers and celebrities, as well as cooking, mixology, and even magic!

We were tasked with revamping the show package and creating a robust toolkit for the monthly series. For this we leaned into a stylish and sophisticated look, making use of video and photography from within several of the actual iPic Theaters. This is all wrapped in a frenetic, yet elegant, animation system that will carry the brand for seasons to come.

Timberland – Aerocore

Like a Shot in the Dark.

CLIENT:
Timberland
via Periera & O’Dell

We nearly jumped out of our shoes when Periera & O’Dell came to us to produce this spot for the great American brand, Timberland.

They needed a production company that could direct, shoot, and finish this teaser on a shoestring budget. Never daunted by funding challenges, we worked with POD to find the best solution to fit their creative needs and resources.

Great ideas can come from a shot in the dark. To tease the Aerocore sole of these new active-boots, we wanted to slowly reveal the various aspects of the boot by recreating that abstract space where ideas come to life. We also couldn’t give away too much of the full boot, as this spot was to focus on the sole.

Shooting the product on black allowed for dramatic reveals and versatile light play. We painted with light to draw the viewer into the areas of interest. Rim lighting accentuates the design without giving away the final reveal.

From the darkness, we begin to see light that traces new, but familiar, forms… a tread pattern, detailed stitching, lacing, and the waffle of the heel.

Subtle post techniques were used to enhance the live action shoot, with added atmospherics and light play. This brought depth to each shot while unifying and elevating the overall look of the spot.

Clean typography animates on at key moments, highlighting the various features of the Aerocore technology.

Finally, we emerge on a wider shot, the form complete yet not fully revealed. A flash of light illuminates the scene and the Aerocore Boot is fully visible, more than a sum of its parts.

To bring everything together, Explosion Robinson came through with some amazing sound design, making use of Formula 1 race cars, thunder, and abstract voids.

BEHIND THE SCENES

In the Director’s Cut, at top, we pushed for a more monochromatic palette. The Aerocore sole is actually a creamy white color. For this teaser, we preferred to push it in to cleaner white realm. We also kept the pace up with a snappier edit and more intense sound design.

The client needed to keep that creamy color and focus more on the text call outs. We obliged with a slightly slower paced edit, giving more time for the copy and keeping the ideas of FAST, LIGHT, and FREE.

TIMBERLAND – AEROCORE – CLIENT :30

We had a blast working on this spot. It really hit all of the things we love to do… Finding creative solutions through design and production practices that give a lot of value to both the client and agency.

Nick Jr. – Teenie Genies

Go Shorty, It’s Your Birthday.

CLIENT:
Nick Jr

Shimmer & Shine, those helpful genies, and their pals got a miniature makeover for their new toy collection, Teenie Genies. That meant that our pals at Nick Jr. would look to us once again to bring some life into these minifigs through a trio of spots. They wanted to play up the huge variety of figures available and their diminutive size. Each toy stands under an inch tall!

First up was our Teenie Genie Birthday Surprise. Houses brought everything together for this one; from concept and design, through fabrication, shooting and post production. We tell the story of how our tiny genies came to life and transform an otherwise drab birthday setup into an over the top and bedazzled blowout.

BEHIND THE SCENES

We tapped our inner child setting up the ultimate birthday spread. With Shimmer and Shine’s flair as inspiration, Houses’ production designer sourced every single pink, purple, and teal item in NYC to bring to the party. From there, our fabricators embellished them even further, with glitz and glitter.

The hero of the every party is the cake. For stop-motion, we couldn’t use a real cake, of course! We needed one that would hold up to the hot lights of the set. We first designed ours in Illustrator. From there, our amazing fabricator, Junko, built a foam and clay cake that looks too nice to eat.

We love shooting miniatures with Chris Webb at FX WRX. Running 2 animation tables we were able to get over a minute of animation shot in 4 days! This time around we even managed to bring out the motion control gliders.

Back at Houses’ studio we put on the finishing touches in post. Removing rigs and adding some subtle vfx to enhance the scenes. Our edit and color grade come together to tell this story.

Explosion Robinson elevated the spot with some fun sound design and music supervision.

TEENIE GENIES – KALEIDOSCOPE – SPOT

Next on our docket are these 2 whimsical Kaleidoscope spots. Our main brief was to create a kaleidoscope of genies which eventually resolve with one landing in the hand of a child. No problem!

Nick Jr. shot the kids’ hands at their studio in Times Square. We popped in to supervise our hero shots for this spot.

Our designers and animators nailed the kaleidoscope feel, while allowing the products to read easily. Variety was essential to the client. Luckily we had 100s of genies to choose from.

In addition, we created this seamlessly looping version for Social Media. Watch below, it’s mesmerizing…

TEENIE GENIES – KALEIDOSCOPE – SOCIAL MEDIA LOOPS

Last, and certainly least, we created 8 of these Pocket Sized Power spots for Social Media. Nick Jr chose a few hero minifigs to film in the palms of a few different kids’ hands. We crafted the genie smoke reveals in C4D and After Effects. Here are a few of our favorites.

Year of the Rooster

Breathing Life into the Dead.

CLIENT:
Houses in Motion

Sometimes a good project meets an unfortunate end. So was the case of for this epic journey. The project was killed near completion, but we decided to repurpose most of the work into a fun greeting for the Lunar New Year.

Below you’ll find some of the process and techniques that went into creating these wonderful dragons and landscapes.

DRAGONS

ABOVE: Early dragon models.

RIGHT: A dynamic rig controlled the dozens of joints in the flying dragons.

BELOW: A variety of passes allowed for limitless control in compositing the final look.

THE SILK ROAD

The Silk Road played a major role in this piece. We spent a good amount of time researching the route and the landmarks/locations along the way.

Stylized representations of iconic locations are present along the journey. We wanted these to be instantly recognizable but retain our simple color palette.

OLD MEETS NEW

The final scenes transition us from the ancient to modern times. This transition is depicted by flying past representations of the Terra Cotta Warriors, through Moon Gates and finally ending on today’s Shanghai.

American Down Low – Show Graphics Package

Keep it on the Down Low.

CLIENT:
Hit + Run Creative

Keep it on the down low only if you don’t want others to know about this awesome web series. Each episode takes place at a different location around the U.S.A. These locations play host to hidden underground events that you have to be in the know to get in the door. The smooth operators over at Hit + Run Creative were able to produce this series by finding and scouting out these events. When they asked Houses to create the graphics package for the series we jumped on the bus. Houses presented 3 righteous design directions for consideration (see below).

What came back was a request to take cues from 2 of the directions. We assessed and it made sense, love when a good collaboration comes together. So we combined directions Underground Grit & The Red, White, & Blue which came together with ease. Hit + Run Creative supplied the show open editorial and music. Here at Houses we stylized the footage with a heavy color grade, film grain, animated channel offsets, secondary flash frame graphics, supers, and of course the main title.

Flight Plan – Show Graphics Package

Get Ready for Take Off.

CLIENT:
New York Jets

When the caller ID at Houses displayed the New York Jets our adrenaline started pumping. Knowing how much fun we had working together last year, it was great to hear from them again. This go around the Jets were looking for a graphics show package for their Sunday morning program, Flight Plan. This show is one of their staples and talks all about the previous week’s game as well as the upcoming matchup. We got to throw our hat in the ring with a pitch that had three strong directions. The Jets ultimately chose our “refresh” option knowing they didn’t want to stray too far from the established branding fans have come to know and love.

Using footage of an airfield supplied by the Jets, football game coverage, and stock video of jet pilots/planes, master of the editorial and color grade, Lee Gingold, brought the Graphic Show Open to life. Gingold together with Creative Director Dan DeGloria worked on multiple cuts of varying lengths, sequence of clips, and tracks of music until they landed on the perfect combo of shots and rhythm. The Jets were pumped…everyone was pumped! Along with the Open, Houses designed and delivered Bumpers, Segment Title Cards, Mortise, LowerThirds, Transitions, Sponsor and Credit Bed. The half-hour program airs Sunday mornings at 11:30am on WCBS.

Webby Awards – Artist of the Year

I Miss the Old Kanye.

CLIENT:
Webby Awards

The Webby Awards honored Kanye West at their 20th annual awards show as Artist Of The Year’, in recognition of the social media master’s pioneering use of the internet and his impact on the music landscape. The ceremony’s rules limit the winners’ acceptance speeches to five words, presenting West, who’s known for his lengthy orations, with a challengeWe were tasked to craft an animation-driven retrospective of Yeezy’s year, based on his tweets, which would set up his 5-word acceptance speech

The piece is a visualization of West’s past year using a mix of photographic elements and bold imagery. Taking cues from Kanyepowerful use of the internet, and its disruptive impact on the status quo the music scene, we used glitch and distortion techniques to texture the images and create the look of an environment that’s deconstructing and evolving.

With only one week to take the project from concept to delivery, our team designed, directed, animated and edited the video – and even curated the tweets, with the guidance of Webby’s Director of Creative Content, Jeff Zemetis.

The custom sound design created by Explosion Robinson blew the top off this frenetic montage, setting the pace of the video with a mashup of hip-hop, electronica, and experimental music styles. Sound designers Stephen Hermann and Mauricio Escamilla sampled West’s latest album, ‘The Life of Pablo,’  grabbing melodic and instrumental elements and remixing them to create an original sound. Live drumming was added to to the track to drive fast tempo.

We had a blast working on this. We’re pretty sure Kanye liked it too.

Dual Survival – Show Package

Two Sides to Every Situation.

CLIENT:
Original Media

The gang at Original Media needed a refresh of the graphics package for their hit show Dual Survival and we were happy to oblige. We developed this idea of two sides to every situation. The two survivalists have to work together to make it out alive. The decisions they make seem black & white by the end of the episode when they make it out alive, every time of course. But during the process their world can get turned upside-down.

In addition to the Main Title, we created unique bumpers for each environment the survivalists will encounter: Mountain, Jungle, and Desert. Rounding out the package were the traditional needs for lower thirds, disclaimers and few other specialty full screens. Stay safe, fellas!

Holiday Spectacular – Fashion Show, Las Vegas

A Holiday Themed Spectacle on the Las Vegas Strip.

CLIENT:
GGP / Fashion Show
Las Vegas

Houses had the unique opportunity to work on a one-of-a-kind project when approached by General Growth Properties to create a “holiday experience” on the Las Vegas Strip. GGP’s property, Fashion Show, is a retail venue located on the northwest corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Spring Mountain Road. The plaza of Fashion Show recently went through a major renovation. Part of this renovation was the addition of 3 giant LED screens, equating to 10,000 square feet in total area and towering to 112 feet at its maximum height. This is modern technology at its finest, the screens were designed, manufactured, and installed by USA-based manufacturing company, Daktronics.

With these new screens at our fingertips, Houses hit the ground running researching and conceptualizing a spectacular holiday show for all audiences. The show was to play every hour on the hour from 5pm to 2am with the ultimate goal of driving people into Fashion Show to go visit Santa…and shop of course. So we set out a few rules, design and production parameters, and ran with it. The overarching theme we settled on was; the holiday season from start to finish…

People start the season by decorating their homes…they get wrapped up in the holiday spirit…gifts get built/packaged somewhere (for us it’s in a futuristic Santa’s workshop)…they go participate in a winter activity…they enjoy giving and receiving gifts…they go to a party, they dance, they relish in the holiday spirit…they count down the last seconds….Happy New Year!!

The 4 minute piece came together without a hitch. Everyone was extremely pleased with how the holiday spectacular turned out, as were we. We had a jolly good time working with everyone involved. Enjoy!
